Seventeenth Ubuntu Touch Firmware Update

The UBports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform after Canonical pulled away from it, has published an OTA-17 (over-the-air) firmware update. The project is also developing an experimental port of the Unity 8 desktop, which has been renamed to Lomiri.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-17 update is available for smartphones OnePlus One, Fairphone 2, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2013, Meizu MX4/PRO 5, VollaPhone, Bq Aquaris E5/E4.5/M10, Sony Xperia X/XZ, OnePlus 3/3T, Xiaomi Redmi 4X, Huawei Nexus 6P, Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet, Google Pixel 3a, OnePlus Two, F(x)tec Pro1/Pro1 X, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Xiaomi Mi A2 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo+ (GT-I9301I). Separately, without the “OTA-17” label, updates will be prepared for Pine64 PinePhone and PineTab devices. Compared to the previous release, the formation of stable builds for Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and Xiaomi Redmi 3s/3x/3sp devices has begun.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-17 is still based on Ubuntu 16.04, but developers' efforts have recently been focused on preparing for the transition to Ubuntu 20.04. Among the innovations in OTA-17, the Mir display server has been updated to version 1.8.1 (previously version 1.2.0 was used) and the implementation of NFC support in most devices originally shipped with the Android 9 platform, such as the Pixel 3a and Volla Phone. Including applications can now read and write NFC tags and interact with other devices using this protocol.

Camera issues related to flash, zoom, rotation, and focus have been resolved on many supported devices, including the OnePlus One smartphone. On OnePlus 3 devices, containers are correctly configured to run regular desktop applications using the Libertine application manager. Pixel 3a has improved thumbnail generation, resolved vibration issues, and optimized power consumption. In Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, a hang when using the trust-store and online-accounts features has been fixed. Problems with automatically adjusting screen brightness have been resolved in Volla Phone.
