At Comic-Con New York, IGN was able to interview Dinesh Shamdasani about the upcoming series based on Final Fantasy XIV.
The live-action series based on Final Fantasy XIV is being produced by Sony Pictures Television, Square Enix and Hivemind (who has behind The Expanse and the upcoming adaptation of The Witcher by Netflix). Dinesh Shamdasani is one of the founders of the latter, although he is also well known to comic book fans as the chief creative officer and CEO of Valiant Entertainment.
He explained why Final Fantasy XIV was chosen over, say, Final Fantasy VII: βIt was a tough choice. VII was definitely discussed. In the end, XIV turned out to be what we thought: βActually, everything we want to do is here.β
This is because Hivemind sees an opportunity to develop the series in conjunction with the current MMORPG.
βWe hope to build something cool that will last for a long time. Final Fantasy XIV, due to its format, is capable of continuing to expand,β said Dinesh Shamdasani. βHopefully it can be some kind of mutual [crossover] where they can say, β³This is a new expansionβ³, and we will say, β³Great, we will build on that in the new seasonβ³; or 'We're going to bring it up [in] the new season' and they'll be like, 'Great, we're going to do an expansion that includes those elements,' and it can feel holistic, which is rare."
One thing's for sure: Final Fantasy fans can rest easy, as there will be plenty of chocobos in the series.
βLiterally, there wasn't even a page on the script draft without the note 'More Chocobos'. [β¦] At the meeting, I said: β³Guys, I know that everyone wants chocobos. On page three, someone rides a chocobo for no reason. It's distracting. This is silly. It's still too early." [I spoke up and saw the worst sideways glances]. They answered me: βWhat are you talking about? Everyone should debut riding a chocobo.β β¦ No, there will be [many] chocobos,β Shamdasani said.
Finally, the co-founder of Hivemind shared some details from the very beginning of the story. The first person we see will be Sid on the airship. With him, the main character will travel through the world of Final Fantasy XIV and discover it for himself. Then the story takes a completely different direction. The hero will assemble a team and secretly follow Final Fantasy - probably, we are talking about the crystal saga. At the same time, people who are far from the series will not understand this until the last. The script is still in its early stages, and therefore everything can change.
As already mentioned, the series has not yet entered full production, so it may take quite a while before it appears on the screens. By the way, Shamdasani also said that Netflix often approached him with an offer to work on this project.
