Server platform based on coreboot

As part of the System Transparency project and a partnership with Mullvad, the Supermicro X11SSH-TF server platform has been ported to the coreboot system. This platform is the first modern server platform with the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v6 processor, also known as Kabylake-DT.

The following functions have been implemented:

  • Added ASPEED 2400 SuperI/O and BMC drivers.
  • Added BMC IPMI interface driver.
  • Tested and measured download functionality.
  • Added support for AST2400 to superiotool.
  • Added support for Intel Xeon E3-1200 to inteltool.
  • Added support for TPM 1.2 and 2.0 modules.

The sources are in the coreboot project and are licensed under GPLv2.

Why is this important?

Closed source firmware development has been the de facto standard for the electronics industry since its inception. This hasn't changed even as more open source projects pop up in other areas. Now that there are more applications for firmware and strict security requirements, it is important to develop them open source.
