Today, January 31, 2020, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technologies and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) announced the initiation of administrative proceedings against Facebook and Twitter.
The reason is the refusal of social networks to comply with the requirements of Russian legislation. We are talking about the need to localize personal data of Russian users on servers in the Russian Federation.
Facebook and Twitter, despite attempts by Roskomnadzor to resolve differences peacefully, refuse to cooperate.
βThe specified companies did not provide, within the prescribed period, information on compliance with the requirements for localizing databases of Russian users of the relevant social networks on servers located on the territory of the Russian Federation,β says the official statement of the Russian department.
Violation of these requirements is subject to an administrative fine in the amount of 1 million to 6 million rubles. Moreover, we can even talk about blocking these services in our country. Let us remind you that it is precisely because of non-compliance with the law on the localization of personal data that another social network, the LinkedIn platform, has already been blocked in Russia.
Roskomnadzor will send a protocol on initiating administrative proceedings to the court within three working days. βThe corresponding protocol was drawn up in the presence of a representative of Twitter. A representative of Facebook did not show up to sign the protocol,β the department said.
