Created EPEL 9 repository with Fedora packages for RHEL 9 and CentOS Stream 9

The EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) project, which maintains a repository of additional packages for RHEL and CentOS, announced the creation of a repository variant for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9-beta and CentOS Stream 9 distributions. Binary builds are formed for the x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le and s390x.

At this stage in the development of the repository, only a few additional packages maintained by the Fedora Linux community have been published. All of the proposed packages are related to the implementation of the iptables toolkit, which has been deprecated in RHEL 9 in favor of nftables.

It is important to note that the EPEL repository used to be formed after the next major release of RHEL, but now, thanks to the advent of CentOS Stream 9, the EPEL 9 repository was launched approximately 5 months before the release of RHEL 9, this explains the small number of proposed packages - as user requests and maintainer activity, the number of packages will gradually increase.

Until the release of RHEL 9, which is expected in May, EPEL 9 will be built on the basis of CentOS Stream 9, after which it will be transferred to the assembly for RHEL 9. Separately, the EPEL Next repository is being formed on the basis of CentOS Stream 8, and EPEL 8 continues to be built for RHEL 8 and can be used in distributions that continued the development of the classic CentOS 8.x.
