Raymond Hill, author of the uBlock Origin blocking system for unwanted content, has published a new release of the uMatrix 1.4.2 browser add-on, which provides firewall-like capabilities for blocking external resources. The update was released as an exception, despite the fact that the development of the add-on was discontinued last year. The formation of a new release does not mean the resumption of development - after the publication of uMatrix 1.4.2, the repository was again returned to archive mode.
The new release fixes a common vulnerability with uBlock Origin that could cause a crash or memory exhaustion when navigating a specially crafted URL. In addition, the already non-existent hpHosts service has been removed from the list of resources and the link to download the list of MVPS hosts has been changed (http has been replaced with https).
