Broadband Internet access in Russia is still used by 60% of subscribers

TMT Consulting company countedthat the number of subscribers of broadband access (BBA) to the Internet in the segment of individuals in Russia reached 33,6 million in the first quarter of this year. The growth compared to the first quarter of 2019 was only 0,5%.

It is noted that the service penetration currently exceeds 60%. In monetary terms, the market volume in the last quarter amounted to 36,5 billion rubles. This is 0,9% more than last year's result (36,1 billion rubles).

The largest Russian broadband operator in the segment of individuals is Rostelecom with a share of 36% in terms of the number of subscribers. ER-Telecom is in second place with a large lag - 12%. This is followed by MTS (10%) and VimpelCom (8%).

In the Moscow market, the penetration of broadband access services in the first quarter of this year amounted to 88%, and the number of subscribers approached 4,3 million. The volume of the capital market amounted to about 4,2 billion rubles.

Analysts say that against the backdrop of a worsening general economic situation, rising unemployment and a decrease in purchasing power, in the foreseeable future, some households are likely to abandon fixed broadband services in favor of mobile Internet or switch to cheaper tariffs in order to save money.
