How the School of Programmers appeared hh.ru

The work of such a highly loaded and constantly growing service as hh.ru is provided by a team of strong IT specialists - we have a lot to teach beginners and everyone who plans to build a career in development. Not only in theory, but most importantly, in practice, launching real hh.ru business projects. The main mission of the project is to help novice (or changing the field of activity) IT professionals with great potential to find a great job.

At the same time, like any large IT company, HeadHunter always needs an influx of new developers. Back in 2010, we realized that the best way to create a talent pool in IT is to organize your own School of programmers. In 2011, the first set and the first release took place. Since then, the school has opened its doors to a new flow of students every year.

How to get into the School of Programmers and what it gives

Training in School of programmers free, and to get into it, you need to go through a serious competitive selection: a test task and an in-person interview. You don't need to be a programming pro to solve the test problems, but you need to think well.

Our ideal candidate for admission has completed a Computer Science course, is well-versed in algorithms and data structure, and has minimal command of any programming language. But the main thing is a bright head!

You need to study seriously - the strongest and most purposeful get to the final projects. The most successful graduates receive job offers at HeadHunter or recommendations to other major IT companies.

Students from such a process receive up-to-date practical knowledge not just from an online course or tutorial from some site, but directly from existing employees of an IT company, on real tasks, with the opportunity to ask something, clarify something. Even if the student is not invited later to HeadHunter, he has excellent chances to pass any interview for a junior or middle position in a similar technology stack.

How long: the training course includes three months of theory and three months of practice in programming in Java and JavaScript, partly in Python.

Where: Classes are held in the Moscow office of HeadHunter in the evenings, so it is quite possible to combine study with work. To develop skills, students are given practical homework.

Normal school timing:

September: start of recruitment (reception of applications).

October: interviews with applicants.

November-February: lectures and homework.

March-May: practical work on real projects.

June: delivery of projects and graduation.

• Backend (Java Virtual Machine, Java collections + NIO, Java frameworks, architecture of search services, databases and SQL, Python basics and much more);
• Frontend (CSS and layout, JavaScript, React and Redux, design and something else);

Key Figures for 2019 Edition

In 2019 compared to last year the number of those wishing to enter the school almost doubled - from 940 to 1700 people. Of those who applied, 1150 people started to complete the test task, but only 87 of them successfully completed and received an invitation for an interview. According to the results of the interview, 27 people were admitted to the school (in 2018 - 25), 15 completed their studies to the final project.

One of the strongest students of this year was hired by HeadHunter right during his studies, the company intends to continue cooperation with ten more graduates. In total, the company now employs 38 graduates Schools of programmers different years.
