SK Hynix inaugurated new DRAM production lines in China

On Thursday, April 18, in the presence of the party leadership and heads of Jiangsu province, as well as employees of the consulate of the Republic of Korea, Executive Director of SK Hynix, Lee Seok-hee (Lee Seok-hee) solemnly commissioned a new factory building at the company's production site in China. This is a C2F plant near Wuxi city, next to the C2 Fab plant. The C2 Fab plant was the first for SK Hynix to host 300mm silicon wafer processing equipment. On these plates, the company began to produce DRAM memory in China.

The factory in Wuxi began to produce products in 2006. As technology improved, the equipment became more and more complex. New scanners and technical processes required an increase in infrastructure in the form of additional equipment. As a result, the volume of production in terms of the area of clean rooms decreased, and there was a need to expand the working area of the enterprise. Yes, in 2016 there was a plan build a new building, which was later called C2F.

From 2017 to 2018 inclusive, investments in C2F amounted to 950 billion South Korean won ($790 million). At the same time, it should be noted that in the new building, construction and equipment of only part of the clean room have been completed. The company does not disclose the capacity of the completed lines and does not specify when it intends to bring the remaining areas into operation. It can be assumed that SK Hynix will stop investing in this project this year due to the downward trend in DRAM wholesale prices. Anyway, analysts expect just such a scenario. The companies plan to resume funding for projects to expand capacities for the production of memory not earlier than the second half of this year or as early as next year.

The C2F complex is designed as a single building with sides of 316 Γ— 180 meters and a height of 51 meters on an area of 58 m000. The C2 Fab building is similar in size. It is estimated, but not known for certain, that the C2 plant can process up to 2 130 mm wafers per month. It can be expected that the maximum capacity of the new workshop will be similar or close to this value.
