How much do graduates of different Russian universities earn

At My Circle, we have recently been working on the education profile of our users, as we believe that education, both higher and additional, is the most important component of a modern career in IT.

We recently added profiles of universities and institutions add. education, which collects statistics on their graduates, as well as the ability to indicate in your professional profile the courses completed. Then conducted a study about the role of education in employment and career of IT specialists.

Further, we became curious about how much graduates of different universities earn who have become developers and have worked for 4 years or more after graduation. Today we will try to answer this question.

How much do graduates of different Russian universities earn

Methodological explanations

In this study, we will only look at back-end, front-end and full-stack developers. For more reliable data, we will take only those of them who studied at universities, which are listed by 100 or more My Circle users and who recruited 10 or more graduates with salaries. We will also leave only those who graduated from the university no later than 2015 and had at least 4 years left to build a career. Finally, we will limit the sample to only those who visited the service during the last year, which means that they most likely updated their profile data.

As a result, we get about 9 thousand graduate developers from 150 Russian universities.

Geography of education and migration of graduates

A tenth of the developers are prepared by the universities of St. Petersburg, a fourth - by the universities of Moscow, almost a third are in the universities of million-plus cities and another third - in the universities of other cities.

It will be correct to compare the salaries of graduates within the respective regions, because salary is strongly related to the geography of work. At the same time, we know that the city of higher education will not necessarily be the same as the city of work in the future: many graduates return to their home cities or, on the contrary, move to new places.

Having considered which of the graduates we studied, their current city differs from the city of the completed university, we got the following amazing picture. It turned out that almost every second graduate who studied in an ordinary city leaves it. A third leave a city with a population of one million, almost one in five leaves a capital city.

Is everyone leaving the provinces for the capitals, we were horrified? Who then remains, where then all our cities and villages, someone else lives in them? Maybe everyone is leaving the country altogether? After counting further, we sighed a little. After studying, they go not only to the capitals, but also to millionaires and other cities.

Two-thirds of those who leave Moscow after their studies, a third of those who leave St. Petersburg, and a fifth of those who leave millionaires go to their hometowns. The largest share of those who went abroad after studying was in St. Petersburg (13%), followed by Moscow (9%).

But still, we see a strong bias: Moscow and St. Petersburg are clearly pulling graduates from other regions. We see our "forge of personnel", but the question of how this forge is restored remains open to other research.

Finally, here are the top Russian cities where developers leave after receiving their education, and let's move on to salaries.

1 Moscow 40,5%
2 St. Petersburg 18,3%

Salaries of graduate developers from Moscow universities

If we do not take into account the migration of developers after graduation, then we get the following median salaries, which are now received by graduates of Moscow universities who have become developers and have worked for 4 years or more after graduation.

If we look separately - at the salaries of developers who remained in Moscow after education, and developers who left the city - we will see that those who left the salary are often a little lower. This difference is explained by our calculations above, where we observed that the majority of people leaving Moscow go to ordinary cities where wages are lower than in Moscow.

In the diagram below, we show only those universities for which 10 or more salaries have accumulated, both for the remaining and for the departed graduates.

Let's look at the salaries of graduates of St. Petersburg universities - those who remained in the city after their studies and left it. Unlike Moscow, the salaries of those who have left are slightly higher. Most likely, this is due to the fact that - as we saw above - many people leave for Moscow and abroad, where salaries are higher.

When we look at the salaries of those who left the million-plus city after education and those who remained in it, we see a rather serious difference in salaries. For those who left, they are sometimes one and a half times higher, and even often more than the salaries of graduates of Moscow universities. It is unlikely that this is due to migration abroad: as we have seen, there are no more than 5% of such people in millionaires. Most likely, such salaries can be explained by the fact that the most qualified and most motivated for a career are leaving, surpassing those who sit in the place where they come

We hope you enjoy our latest exploration. In preparing it, we used the data salary calculator "My circle", in which we collect salaries that IT specialists share with us. If you did not leave us your salary this semester, please come and share the information.

By the way, we have started to prepare another semi-annual report on salaries in IT. That's how it was last half year.
