Rumors about a remake of Red Dead Redemption and story DLC turned out to be false - they were invented for the sake of experiment

At the end of last week on the Internet began to spread rumors that Rockstar Games is working on a remake of Red Dead Redemption and a story addition to Red Dead Redemption 2. Some details looked quite plausible and were supported by earlier information from other sources, but it turned out that gamers were deceived. The user who published this information admitted that he made it up for the sake of an experiment.

Reddit user throwaway11113454 claimed that the remake of the 2010 game will have all the new features of Red Dead Redemption 2, a larger world and new dialogue scenes connecting it to the second part, and the addition will be themed on aliens. He allegedly received this information from his friend, who works as an environment artist at Rockstar.

While full-blown remakes are unusual for Rockstar, rumors of a remastered version didn't seem all that far-fetched. If the company does bring Red Dead Redemption 2 to PC (as indicated by numerous fan finds and hints from Strauss Zelnick, head of Take-Two Interactive), releasing the previous game on modern platforms (and possibly computers) would be quite rational decision. Aliens also did not confuse fans: firstly, in Red Dead Redemption 2 (and also in Grand Theft Auto V and other Rockstar games) they are present in the form "Easter eggs", and secondly, the only addition to the previous part was also dedicated to fantastic creatures - zombies.

A few days later the informant ΠΎΠΏΡƒΠ±Π»ΠΈΠΊΠΎΠ²Π°Π» another post on Reddit in which he admitted to cheating. "This was an experiment I've always wanted to try regarding the spread of rumors among video game fans," he wrote. β€” For some time I thought about how exactly I would do this. I realized that Red Dead Online was of little interest to many people, so I chose [Red Dead Redemption] as a starting point."

The rumors were picked up by the Comicbook website, after which they were covered by almost all gaming media and even some YouTube bloggers. When the information attracted too much attention, the user decided to reveal the truth. β€œI realized that some people will believe anything as long as it sounds true,” he said. β€” I also realized that mass media is a powerful tool. Over 70 thousand people read my post, and I’m glad that most of them were skeptical.”

Unofficial information about Rockstar games appears regularly, which is largely facilitated by the company's policy: management prefers not to talk about its projects before the official announcement, and simply ignores rumors. However, the β€œexperiment” of throwaway11113454 turned out to be more thoughtful than, for example, the message about the imminent announcement of PC versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Bloodborne exclusive to the Epic Games Store, appeared in April on 4chan.
