SoftBank to Invest $125M in Alphabet Subsidiary to Launch Cellular Antennas into the Sky

HAPSMobile, which is backed by conglomerate SoftBank, is exploring ways to bring high-speed Internet to remote regions by placing network equipment at high altitudes, today announced it will invest $125 million in Alphabet's subsidiary Loon, which is working on a solution to the same problem.

The only difference between the companies is that Loon seeks to deploy Internet coverage for remote and hard-to-reach areas using balloons launched into the air with special equipment, while HAPSMobile uses unmanned aerial vehicles for this.

It should be noted that, despite gaps in Internet coverage in rural areas or during natural disasters, mobile operators, governments and other potential customers have not yet shown much enthusiasm for buying technologies from the two companies.

Loon and HAPSMobile have announced a partnership that could help solve the problem of providing high-speed Internet to residents of hard-to-reach regions where traditional cell towers cannot be placed.
