Sony continues to optimize AMD Jaguar support for PS4 in LLVM Clang compiler

AMD continues to improve Btver2/Jaguar compiler code to optimize performance. And in this, oddly enough, there is a huge merit of Sony. After all, it is the Japanese corporation that uses LLVM Clang as the default toolkit for its PlayStation 4. And the console, we recall, is based on the hybrid β€œred” Jaguar chip.

Sony continues to optimize AMD Jaguar support for PS4 in LLVM Clang compiler

Last week, another update was added to the Jaguar/Btver2 target code that reduces latency and improves the throughput of CMPXCHG instructions. This will generally speed up the work. As such, Sony continues to push forward their improvements to the compiler.

In addition to optimizations to the existing console, this may indicate the preparation of the PS5 software side. This console will be based on the third generation Ryzen processor with Navi graphics. And given that Sony has already been working on improvements for LLVM for the Zen architecture, this looks quite logical.

As noted, the current and upcoming planned changes will be included in the release of LLVM Clang 10.0, which is due out in early 2020.
