Sony continues to reveal some details about its new generation gaming console. Key features last month
Sony's statement reads as follows: “Ultra-fast solid state drive is the key to our next generation. We want to make loading screens a thing of the past and also allow developers to create new and unique gameplay experiences."
It turns out that Sony believes that the SSD will be a key feature of the PlayStation 5 console. In a sense, this may indeed be a more significant upgrade than the new CPU and GPU, because the drive affects the interaction with the console and its speed. The games themselves, as well as their levels or maps, will load much faster. Moreover, the availability of a fast drive opens up new opportunities for developers, allowing them to create more “heavy” projects without fear of “brakes” with loading.
Also, according to Sony, several conclusions can be drawn about the PlayStation 5 drive. Firstly, the words about the “ultra-fast solid state drive” suggest that the new product will use an NVMe SSD. Perhaps the PCIe 4.0 bus will be involved, because its support will be implemented in AMD processors on Zen 2.
Secondly, the words about the lack of boot screens may indicate that the games will be installed directly on the solid state drive, which means that the new Sony console will receive a very capacious SSD. Note that after Sony's first announcement about the use of SSD in the future PlayStation, assumptions began to appear that a small drive for the system would be used there, and a regular hard drive would act as the main storage.
Recall that the next generation Sony PlayStation console should be released next year, 2020. According to rumors, the novelty at the start of sales will cost more than its predecessors – $499 or even more.
