Arm Co-Founder Launches Campaign and Demands British Authorities to Intervene in NVIDIA Deal

Today was announced about the sale by the Japanese company SoftBank of the British chip designer Arm to the American NVIDIA. Immediately afterwards, Arm co-founder Hermann Hauser call deal a disaster that will destroy the company's business model. And a little later, he also launched a public campaign "Save Arm” (Save Arm) and wrote an open letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, trying to draw the attention of the authorities to this deal.

Arm Co-Founder Launches Campaign and Demands British Authorities to Intervene in NVIDIA Deal

In an open letter to Boris Johnson, Mr. Houser expressed "extreme concern" about the Arm acquisition deal by NVIDIA and how it will affect domestic employment, Arm's business model and the future of the UK's economic independence from the US and its interests. In parallel, Hauser launched a special website savearm.co.uk, hoping to gain public support in this way, and also began collecting signatures from business representatives and others.

Houser is seeking to get the attention of the British authorities to block the deal, or at least create legally binding provisions that will keep jobs and prevent NVIDIA from enjoying advantages over other companies with which Arm cooperates. Houser points out that after the purchase of Arm by an American legal entity, the further activities of the company will be subject to US export laws. This is one of the key points, since many of Arm's partners are Chinese companies or enterprises, which in turn do business in China.

Recall that when SoftBank acquired Arm four years ago, it pledged to keep the processor developer headquartered in the UK. Now, it has been announced that SoftBank will continue to fulfill its earlier commitments, which will expire in September 2021.
