Humble Bundle co-founders step down after most successful year

Humble Bundle co-founders Jeffrey Rosen and John Graham have stepped down as CEO and COO of the company. This marks the end of an era in the history of this digital marketplace that they have led for a decade. However, it's also the beginning of a new era, with veteran video game executive Alan Patmore taking over and already in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Humble Bundle.

“Ten years have passed, and now, years later, I think it's time for me to take a break,” said Mr. Graham in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. “Business is going surprisingly well: 2018 was our most successful year, and 2019 marked the best start in the history of the company ... But we found someone who is better than us to cope with growing the business to new heights.”

Lord Rosen added: “We are not leaving. We will still be here until the end of the year (mostly as advisors), and hopefully for a long time after that. But we're more used to running small start-ups, and Humble Bundle has become huge. For our benefit, and for the benefit of the Humble Bundle, I think Alan is going to do a really good job."

While Alan Patmore has not specifically run a digital store, his experience in the industry is broad. He was most recently Director of Product at Kixeye, prior to that he was the CEO of Zynga, and before that he was Vice President of Product Development at Double Fine. With Humble Bundle currently a publisher as well as a digital distribution platform with a wide range of business models, a new chief executive will clearly be in place.

“My background in free and social gaming is actually quite applicable to a digital store like Humble,” said Patmore, who will take on the role of executive vice president and chief executive officer of the company. — There are many similarities in terms of process, development, economics and even ethics. In addition, my background in traditional games and publishing is a good fit for the publishing side of the company's business."

Charity, as noted by the new head, will continue to be one of the foundations of the Humble Bundle. Since its takeover by Ziff Davis in October 2017 (some thought the deal would undermine that side of the business), Humble has become even more philanthropic. In 2018 alone, the company donated $25 million, and in total during its existence - $146 million.
