DayZ Creator Allows Some Employees to Take Unlimited Vacation and Sick Leave

New Zealand-based studio Rocketwerkz is set up so that some employees can take advantage of benefits like unlimited annual leave and sick days. It was founded by Dean Hall, creator of the original DayZ modification.

Speaking to Stuff, Hall said the structure was conceived as a way to attract talent to the studio.

“You can have 30 people working on a $20 million or $30 million project, so you already trust them,” he said. If you trust them with big projects and large sums of money, why can't you trust them to manage your time? That's where we started." Rocketwerkz employees are required to take a minimum of four weeks of vacation per year, but they may take as much as their other duties allow. Hall said he wanted to discourage people from staying at work unnecessarily in order to accumulate vacation days. “This is stupid,” he added.

Unlimited annual leave is granted only to the most experienced employees, the highest-ranking staff in the three-tier system, which also includes unlimited sick days. Employees at the previous level receive only unlimited sick leave (including benefits). The least experienced employees work according to more standard rules. “For many, this was their first real job, and it went one of two ways,” Hall said. “For some it worked fine, but others needed order to be told the hours they were supposed to be at work. It might take one or two years before they start to be of value to the company, and they need [to go through this period] being at work and hearing what's going on."

This is not the only incentive to attract talent to New Zealand. The government and invests in the growth of the national gaming industry. For example, for this purpose, $10 million was allocated to the relevant funds in October.

Currently Rocketwerkz develops adventure role-playing action Living Dark in the entourage of neo-noir. It will be released exclusively on PC before the end of the year.
