The mechanic appeared in the game in early June in the Mysterious Jungle mode. Players may have found totems in the game that give various effects to characters when worshipped. One such effect was health regeneration. Bassam Al-Shati, a professor of theology at Kuwait University's Shariah College, criticized the game, saying such mechanics violate local traditions that only worship Allah. Worshiping idols is considered one of the greatest sins.

β€œThe special interest in games has made this activity one of the favorite activities of millions of children and adults. Now this is not just entertainment, because such things can be dangerous if people are taught polytheism. They can get used to it and become addicted to it,” Al-Shati said.

Tencent apologized to Muslim fans and removed the totem worship animation. Whether the developers plan to remove the mechanic completely or turn it off selectively is still unclear.
