Private aerospace company SpaceX received final approval Tuesday to build a research and manufacturing facility on vacant land in the Los Angeles waterfront for its Starship interplanetary spacecraft project.

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to build the facility (12–0).

Activities at the facility will be limited to research, design and manufacturing of spacecraft components. The created spacecraft will be transported from the port complex to the cosmodrome by barge or ship.

The decision will allow SpaceX to lease 12,5 acres (5 ha) of land on Terminal Island for the construction of a research and production complex with a starting rent of $1,7 million per year with the possibility of expanding the leased area to 19 acres (7,7 ha). ).
