Specialists from Kaspersky Lab discovered the shadow market of digital identities

As part of the Security Analyst Summit 2019, which is taking place these days in Singapore, specialists from Kaspersky Lab talked about how they managed to discover a shadow market for digital user data.

The very concept of a digital personality includes dozens of parameters that are commonly called digital fingerprints. Such traces appear when the user makes payments using web browsers and mobile applications. The digital identity is also formed from information that is collected by analytical methods that allow determining the habits of a particular user when working on the Internet.

Specialists from Kaspersky Lab spoke about the Genesis platform, which is a real black market for digital personalities. The cost of information about the user on it ranges from $5 to $200. It is reported that Genesis mainly has information about users from the United States, Canada and some countries in the European region. The data acquired in this way can be used to steal money, photos, confidential data, important documents, etc.

Experts warn that Genesis is popular and is used by cybercriminal groups that use digital twins to bypass anti-fraud tools. To counteract such activity, Kaspersky Lab recommends that companies use two-factor authentication at all stages of identity verification. Experts advise speeding up the process of introducing biometric authentication tools, as well as other technologies that can be used to verify identity.
