Spotify donates 100 euros in open source awards

The music service Spotify has introduced the FOSS Fund initiative, under which it intends to donate 100 thousand euros to developers supporting various independent open source projects throughout the year. Applicants for support will be nominated by Spotify engineers, after which a specially convened committee will select the award recipients. Projects that will receive awards will be announced in May. Spotify uses a lot of independent open source development in its business and, through this initiative, intends to give back to the community for creating high-quality public code.

Funding will be available to independent and actively supported projects used by Spotify, but not associated with any companies and not developed by Spotify employees. Eligible open source projects will be determined based on project nominations from Spotify engineers, developers, researchers and product managers, as well as an analysis of the most popular dependencies in Spotify's internal repositories. It is expected that financial support will help in maintaining projects and developing their functionality.
