Counterpoint Technology Market Research analyzed the situation in the global smartphone market in the second quarter of this year. The industry is undergoing a transformation due to the pandemic and the development of fifth generation (5G) mobile communications.
It is noted that in the last quarter, the market showed the biggest decline in history. Sales of smartphones collapsed by almost a quarter - by 23%. This is due to the self-isolation of people, the temporary closure of mobile phone shops and retail stores.
The average price of "smart" cellular devices on a global scale has risen by 10%. Growth was recorded in all regions except Latin America. This situation is explained by the formation of a segment of 5G devices, which were very expensive in the second quarter. In addition, against the background of a 23% decline in the market as a whole, the premium smartphone category showed only an 8% decline. This provoked an increase in the average cost of devices.
It is also noted that the total revenue of smartphone suppliers from April to June inclusive decreased by 15% compared to the same period in 2019.
In the total revenue from the sale of smartphones, about a third (34%) went to Apple. Another 20% was received by Huawei, which is under the yoke of US sanctions. Samsung controls about 17% of the industry in terms of money.
