US urges South Korea to ditch Huawei products

According to the Chosun Ilbo, a US State Department official said in a recent meeting with his South Korean counterpart that local telecommunications company LG Uplus Corp, which uses Huawei equipment, "should not be allowed to operate in areas of activity related to South Korean national security issues." The official added that if not immediately, then eventually Huawei should be expelled from the country.

Washington has insisted that its allies do not use equipment made by Huawei over concerns that it could later be used for espionage or cyberattacks. In turn, Huawei has repeatedly stated that there is no basis for such fears.
