Status of preparation of the first stable release of KDE Plasma Mobile

KDE Developers published report on the preparation of the first stable release of the mobile platform Plasma Mobile. It is noted that there is no strict release preparation schedule and Plasma Mobile 1.0 will be formed after all the planned components are ready.

Already available applications adapted for use on mobile devices and covering basic needs:

Developed by individual developers, but not yet translated into the Plasma Mobile repositories:

Most of the above programs contain flaws or are not brought to the proper functionality. For example, there are unresolved problems in the program for sending SMS, the calendar-scheduler requires Translation to the timer_fd kernel interface for sending notifications during sleep mode, no the ability to answer a call when the screen is off or locked.

Prior to the first release, there are also some issues that need to be resolved in the KWin composite server using Wayland. In particular, it is necessary to ensure support Selectively updating the contents of surfaces, skipping areas that have not been changed (will improve performance and reduce energy consumption). Support for displaying thumbnails in the interface for switching between tasks has not yet been implemented. It is required to implement support for the input-method-unstable-v1 protocol to organize input from the on-screen keyboard in some third-party applications. You need to profile and optimize KWin performance.

Of the common tasks, support for displaying notifications in the lock screen interface and the creation of missing modules for the configurator are mentioned. In its current form, the configurator allows you to set the date and time, language settings, supports attaching Nextcloud and Google accounts, provides simple Wi-Fi settings, and displays general information about the system.

Among the tasks scheduled for implementation are automatic receipt of time from a mobile operator, setting sound and notification settings, displaying information about IMEI, MAC address, mobile network and SIM card, support for Wi-Fi security modes other than WPA2-PSK, connectivity to hidden wireless networks, setting mobile data modes,
language settings extensions, Bluetooth settings, keyboard layout management, screen lock and PIN settings, power modes.

Recall that the Plasma Mobile platform is based on the mobile edition of the Plasma 5 desktop, the KDE Frameworks 5 libraries, the phone stack Ofono and communication framework Telepathy. Qt and a framework are used to create the application interface Kirigami from the KDE Frameworks, which allows you to create universal interfaces suitable for smartphones, tablets and PCs. The kwin_wayland composite server is used to display graphics. PulseAudio is used for sound processing.

Plasma Mobile is not tied to low-level components of the operating system, which makes it possible to ensure that the platform can work under different base OS, including launching on top of Ubuntu and Wen. It supports the execution of plasma widgets and applications for the KDE Plasma desktop, as well as the ability to use programs written for the UBports/Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish and Nemo platforms.
