British developer Sumo Digital has opened a new studio in Warrington.

The branch is the developer's seventh UK studio - eighth globally if the team in Pune, India is counted - and will be known as Sumo North West. It will be led by Scott Kirkland, former co-founder of Evolution Studios (creator of the Motorstorm series).

Sumo Digital is best known for collaborative development projects. In her portfolio Crackdown 3, LittleBigPlanet 3 and the Sonic & Sega All-Stars racing series (including Team Sonic Racing this year). The opening of Sumo North West marks the expansion of the company's services, with the team focusing on "high-end engineering and software support services."

Sumo Digital managing director Gary Dunn said that North West is already involved in several projects. The developer hopes to draw on the talent pool of the region where Evolution Studios and SCE Studio Liverpool (creator of WipeOut) were based to form their team.
