Analyst firm SuperData Research released its monthly sales report, which says that digital spending on games fell 1% worldwide in September to $8,9 billion.
Part of this decline was due to new releases that fell short of expectations. But one hit also had a big impact, showing a sharp drop in performance. SuperData Research calculated that Fortnite's revenue across all platforms was down 43% from August, making September 2019 the worst month (in terms of sales) since November 2017.
This decline is reflected on the SuperData Research chart, where Fortnite was number one on consoles in August but dropped to number seven in September. On the PC chart, the game moved from six to nine.
In terms of disappointing new releases, FIFA 20 didn't encourage consumers who bought it to spend in-game - SuperData Research reported spending in the sports sim dropped in a month. The analytical company believes that this was due to a comparison with the previous part of FIFA, since then it came out after the World Cup in Russia.
For NBA 2K20, SuperData Research said the basketball sim is up 6% in a month. By comparison, last September the FIFA and NBA series posted a combined 24% growth (in terms of in-game sales).
But not everyone had a bad day in September. SuperData Research noted that Fate/Grand Order's revenue rose 88% to $246 million, largely due to growth in China. Shooter
