The existence of Windows Core OS was confirmed by the benchmark

Ahead of the Build 2020 conference, the Geekbench test package database once again mentioned the modular Windows Core operating system, which had previously appeared in leaks. Microsoft itself has not officially confirmed its existence, but unofficial data has been leaked.

The existence of Windows Core OS was confirmed by the benchmark

As expected, Windows Core OS will be able to run on laptops, ultrabooks, dual-screen devices, HoloLens holographic helmets and so on. Perhaps smartphones will also appear on its basis. In any case, a modular system is declared for it, which can point to different graphical environments, similar to different DEs in Linux distributions.

A virtual machine running 64-bit Windows Core has appeared in the Geekbench database. The hardware base is a PC based on an Intel Core i5-L15G7 Lakefield processor with a base clock speed of 1,38 GHz and 2,95 GHz in turbo boost.

Unfortunately, the test results can hardly say anything more than the very fact of the existence of the OS. However, this is already enough, given the lack of official statements from Redmond.

At the moment, there is no exact information about when Windows Core OS will be released, in what form, under what edition, and so on. Probably the first build based on it will be Windows 10X, which is expected this year.

Note that Microsoft plans to significantly improve the performance of containers in Windows 10X, which will allow Win32 applications to run at the same speed as on regular Windows 10.
