systemd 245

The new release of perhaps the most famous of the free system managers.

The most interesting (in my opinion) changes in this release:

  • systemd-homed is a new component that allows you to transparently and conveniently manage encrypted home directories, providing portability (no need to worry about different UIDs on different systems), security (LUKS by default backend) and the ability to migrate to freshly installed systems by copying a single file. Full details are given in https://media.ccc.de/v/ASG2019-164-reinventing-home-directories
  • systemd-userdb is a new component, without which it was impossible to implement the previous service. Extensible user database in JSON format, replacing (in the bright future) and supplementing (starting with this release) the /etc/passwd format
  • namespaces for systemd-journald - now you can run a separate copy of the journal daemon (with its own limits, policies, etc.) and use it for a group of processes
  • improvements in SELinux support
  • ProtectClock= option to protect the system time from modification, analogous to ProtectSystem= and other Protect options
  • many improvements to systemd-networkd in terms of flexible routing, QoS, etc.
  • site has been completely redesigned https://systemd.io/ β€” great documentation is now at your fingertips
  • new logo by Tobias Bernard

And many other changes that will surely go unnoticed amid a lively discussion about homed and userd πŸ™‚
