Telegram Blames China for DDoS Attack During Hong Kong Protests

The founder of Telegram wrote on Twitter that Chinese IP addresses were predominantly used for the DDoS attack. He also stressed that traditionally the largest DDoS attacks on Telegram coincide in time with protests in Hong Kong, and this case was no exception.

The Telegram messenger is actively used by Hong Kong residents, as it avoids detection in the process of organizing and coordinating protests. The attack on Telegram may mean that by such actions the Chinese government is trying to disrupt the messenger and limit its effectiveness as a tool for organizing thousands of protests.

According to online sources, apps like Telegram and Firechat that allow you to send encrypted messages are currently very popular among users of the Hong Kong App Store. This is not surprising, since many protesters try to hide their identity. In addition to using encrypted messengers, protesters are trying to hide their faces to avoid identification by facial recognition systems.

Recall, thousands of people protested against amendments to the law on extradition was held in Hong Kong on Wednesday. Disgruntled citizens set up barricades and clashed with police near the Hong Kong Legislative Assembly complex. This led to the fact that the meeting of Parliament, in which it was planned to consider amendments to the law, had to be cancelled.
