Tesla added a test track to the German Gigafactory project and removed battery production

Tesla has changed the project to build a Gigafactory in Berlin (Germany). The company has submitted an updated application for approval under the Federal Emission Control Act for the plant to the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment, which contains a number of changes from the original version.

According to local media reports, the main changes in the new plan for the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin include:

  • Tesla wants to cut down 30% more trees - 193,27 acres (78,2 ha) instead of the current 154,54 acres (62,5 ha).
  • Battery production has been removed from the application.
  • Tesla has reduced its planned peak water demand by 33%.
  • The location of the wastewater disposal and treatment system was changed.
  • Instead of an annual capacity of 500 vehicles per year, the application now lists "000 or more".

According to sources, additional deforestation is required to accommodate a test site at this site.

According to the plan, Tesla must complete construction work by March 2021 in order to begin production of the Model Y at the plant by July of that year. Tesla reportedly has no plans to launch the Model Y electric car in the European market until it starts producing them in Germany.

The final approval of the application will take a long time, as the local government will accept public comments on the project until September.

Only 12 months are left before the start of the production of electric vehicles, so the company intends to start building the plant building at its own peril and risk, without receiving full approval of the project.

A drone video shows that Tesla began installing the legs of the first factory building as early as July 1.
