In a few weeks, Tesla buyers will have to shell out more for an advanced version of Full Self-Driving Autopilot, which is still not fully functional. As CEO Elon Musk promises, in the future this kit will provide owners of electric vehicles with a full-fledged autopilot. The other day, Mr. Musk tweeted that from May 1, the price for such an option will increase significantly.

Tesla cars do not yet have a full-fledged autopilot, although the functionality of the built-in system is gradually expanding. Mr. Musk has promised that Tesla's advanced driver-assistance capabilities will continue to improve until a level of full automation is eventually reached. The executive did not specify the amount by which the cost of the full autopilot option would increase, but confirmed that the increase would be in the range of $3000. Now, when buying a car, the option costs $5000 (subsequent installation is $7000).

The price increase comes amid a number of notable changes and developments, including the upcoming Investor Autonomy Day event on April 22, where Tesla will talk and show investors its achievements in the field of autonomous driving. On Thursday, Tesla announced that the Advanced Driver Assistance System (Basic Autopilot), which offers a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping, is now a standard feature. Previously, the cost of this option was $3000, and after being included in the standard package, it became $500 cheaper. Tesla also announced that it will start selling the Model 3 on lease.
Full Self-Driving includes a range of advanced features, including Navigate on Autopilot, an active system that automatically steers the car off the highway and changes lanes. Once drivers enter a destination into the navigation system, they can enable Navigate on Autopilot. Tesla continues to expand the functionality gradually, promising to implement stop signal response, traffic lights, city driving support and automatic parking in the future.
The next major step will be Tesla's new custom chip called Hardware 3, which has recently entered production. Tesla's hardware is designed to provide fundamentally higher performance in neural network algorithms than the NVIDIA platform currently used in the Model S, X, and 3. Mr. Musk recently tweeted that his company would start the procedure in a few months replacing the autopilot platform on existing machines with the Full Self-Driving option.
