Tor Project to lay off a third of its employees

The non-profit organization Tor Project, whose activities are related to the development of the Tor anonymous network, has announced a reduction in staff. Due to the economic uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, 13 out of 35 employees will leave the organization.

Tor Project to lay off a third of its employees

β€œTor, like much of the world, is trapped in the COVID-19 crisis. The crisis has hit us hard, as it has hit many other nonprofits and small businesses. We had to make some difficult decisions, including parting ways with 13 employees who helped make the Tor network available to millions of people around the world. We will continue to move forward with a core team of 22,” said Isabela Bagueros, Executive Director of the Tor Project.

It was also noted that despite the reduction in staff, the development team will continue to support their servers and software in the future. We are talking about the anonymous Tor network and the Internet browser Tor Browser.

The Tor Project's decision does not come as something of a surprise, as the organization exists solely on donations. At the end of each year, the organization holds a fundraising campaign that helps to continue the work it has begun in the future. Since most of the users, both private and legal, are currently focused on solving their own problems, the Tor team has had problems raising the funds necessary for the continued existence and development of the project in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
