Toyota postponed the communication of their cars with the help of DSRC technology

Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday that it is phasing out plans to roll out Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) technology to U.S. vehicles starting in 2021, which allows cars and trucks to communicate with each other on the 5,9 GHz band during collision avoidance.

It should be noted that in the US, automakers are divided on whether to continue with the implementation of the DSRC system or use a system based on 4G or 5G technologies.

In April 2018 Toyota announced about plans to begin implementing DSRC technology in 2021 with a goal of adopting it in most of their vehicles by the mid-2020s.

In 1999, some of the spectrum for DSRC in the 5,9 GHz band was allocated to car manufacturers, but it was practically not used. In this regard, some representatives of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and cable companies have proposed reallocating the spectrum to use it for Wi-Fi and other purposes.

Toyota explained its decision by "a number of factors, including the need for greater commitment from the automotive industry, as well as support from the federal government in maintaining the 5,9 GHz frequency band for DSRC."

The Japanese company added that it intends to "continue to re-evaluate the deployment environment" and that it remains a big supporter of DSRC "because it believes it is the only proven and available technology for collision avoidance."
