Approximate dates for the launch of the next navigation satellite "Glonass-K" have been determined. This is reported by RIA Novosti, referring to information received from an informed source in the rocket and space industry.

Glonass-K is the third generation of domestic spacecraft for navigation (the first generation is Glonass, the second is Glonass-M). The new satellites differ from Glonass-M satellites in their improved technical characteristics and extended active lifetime. In particular, improved location accuracy is provided.

The first satellite of the Glonass-K family was launched back in 2011, and the second satellite of the series was launched in 2014. Now the launch of the third Glonass-K satellite into orbit is being prepared.

The launch is tentatively scheduled for May, that is, at the end of the coming spring. The launch will be carried out from the state test cosmodrome Plesetsk in the Arkhangelsk region. In this case, the Soyuz-2.1b rocket and the Fregat upper stage will be used.

It is also noted that a total of nine Glonass-K satellites will be launched into orbit by 2022. This will significantly upgrade the Russian GLONASS constellation, improving navigation capabilities.
