TSMC's quarterly report was eagerly awaited, as it could show the dynamics of changes in demand for semiconductor components. The company not only managed to beat its first-quarter revenue guidance, but also formed a favorable second-quarter outlook.
At the end of the last quarter, TSMC's revenue
Wendell Huang, chief financial officer of TSMC, said the traditional first-quarter decline in revenue was almost avoided due to growth in demand for high-performance computing components and smartphones with 5G networks. In general, for the quarter, revenue from the sale of components for smartphones decreased by 9%, so the segment of 5G devices could not resist the general trend. From the sale of components for smartphones, TSMC received 49% of total revenue in the first quarter, although this figure reached 53% a quarter earlier. On the other hand, a year ago this share did not exceed 47%, so in the medium term, TSMC is increasing its dependence on the smartphone market.
The share of 7nm products in revenue remained at the level of the previous quarter - 35%. The second most popular process technology is 16nm with 19% of revenue, but the share of 28nm technology in the annual comparison decreased from 20% to 14%. Industry sources attribute this to the decline in demand for automotive and consumer electronics components, many of which are manufactured using 28nm technology. This was not fully seen in the first quarter, as TSMC's consumer electronics revenue jumped 44% sequentially.
In the second quarter, TSMC expects to maintain revenue in the range of $10,1 billion to $10,4 billion, with profit margins in the range of 50% to 52%. According to the company's chief financial officer, the decline in demand for components for smartphones will be offset by growth in demand in the segment of high-performance computing and 5G solutions.
