Twitter blocks about 4800 accounts linked to the Iranian government

Online sources report that Twitter administrators have blocked about 4800 accounts that are allegedly controlled by the Iranian government or associated with it. Not so long ago, Twitter released a detailed report on how the fight against the spread of fake news within the platform is being carried out, as well as how users who violate the rules are blocked.

In addition to Iranian accounts, Twitter administrators have blocked four accounts suspected of links to the Russian Internet Research Agency (IRA), 130 fake accounts associated with the Catalan independence movement from Spain, and 33 accounts belonging to businesses from Venezuela.

As for Iranian accounts, depending on the type of their activity, they were divided into three categories. Over 1600 accounts have been used to post global news on Twitter in support of the incumbent Iranian government. More than 2800 accounts have been banned for being used by anonymous users to discuss and influence political and social issues in Iran. About 250 accounts were used to discuss issues and publish news related to Israel.

It is worth noting that Twitter regularly blocks accounts that are suspected of interference in elections by Iran, Russia and other countries. In February of this year, 2600 accounts associated with Iran were blocked on the platform, as well as 418 accounts associated with the Russian Internet Research Agency.
