Thousands of video call recordings from Zoom users have become freely available

It became known that thousands of recordings of video calls from the Zoom service were posted publicly on the Internet. This was reported by The Washington Post. The leaked recordings highlight the privacy risks faced by users of popular video conferencing services.

Thousands of video call recordings from Zoom users have become freely available

The report said that recordings of video calls were found on YouTube and Vimeo. It was possible to identify records of various types, including those disclosing confidential data of individuals and companies. The source talks about recordings of communication between patients and doctors, the educational process of school-age children, work meetings of various companies representing the small business segment, etc. It is noted that in many cases the recordings contain data that allows identifying the people captured in the video, as well as revealing confidential information about them.

Because Zoom uses a consistent naming scheme for videos, you can find a ton of videos featuring users of the service using regular search queries. The message deliberately does not disclose the naming scheme, and also says that representatives of the service were notified of the problem before the publication of the material.

The Zoom service does not record video by default, but provides this option for users. Zoom said in a statement that the service "provides users with a safe and secure way to store recordings" and offers instructions to follow to help make calls more private. β€œIf video conferencing hosts later decide to upload meeting recordings elsewhere, we strongly encourage them to exercise extreme caution and openness to other participants in the conversations,” Zoom said in a statement.

The publication's journalists were able to find several people who appeared in the recordings of Zoom calls that were made publicly available. Each of them confirmed that they have no idea how the videos became public.
