The Russian military may have its own mobile operator

Mobile operator Voentelecom received a virtual operator license (Mobile Virtual Network, MVNO) for five years to operate throughout the country. It will operate on the basis of Tele2 networks and provide enhanced protection for communication channels. Its audience will be residents of military camps and, potentially, military personnel.

The Russian military may have its own mobile operator

According to Vedomosti, citing the co-owner of one of the virtual operators, Voentelecom will operate in Full MVNO mode. That is, only frequencies and repeaters will be taken from the base operator. This will allow the implementation of various protection and encryption systems, as well as development independently of the base operator.

It should be noted that in March Russia adopted a law that restricts the use of smartphones and the Internet by military personnel. The military and conscripts are prohibited from using smartphones during hostilities, on combat duty, in a military unit, and so on. And on the Web, you can’t report about the features of the service, about former colleagues and relatives.

It is assumed that the virtual operator of Voentelecom will be able to track which sites military personnel visit, what they write, and the like. The operator will be able to restrict access to the Internet, change services for the subscriber, and control geolocation. In general, technically this is a very powerful solution to counteract data leaks.

At the moment, there is no information about the timing and scale of the launch. It is not known where the pilot project can start and how much it will cost. At the same time, representatives of the Ministry of Defense and Voentelecom did not respond to a media request, and a Tele2 representative declined to comment.
