The "vast majority" of solar cells produced at Tesla's plant in upstate New York are sold overseas rather than used to make the Tesla Solar Roof, as originally expected, according to documents seen by Reuters.
The information underscores the depth of Tesla's problems in the U.S. solar panel business, which it entered into following its controversial $2,6 billion acquisition of SolarCity.
According to official data as of February 28, there are only 21 Solar Roof systems in use in the state of California. These systems were connected by three investor-owned utilities. And only a few Solar Roof systems, according to a former Tesla employee, have been installed in the northeastern United States.
