Taxi booking service Uber has been given permission to resume testing its self-driving cars on public roads in California, as long as the driver is in the cab for insurance in case of an emergency.
Nearly two years after an Uber autonomous vehicle killed a pedestrian in Arizona, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on Wednesday issued a test permit to Uber Advanced Technologies' autonomous vehicle division.
However, the company said it has no plans to test robotic vehicles in the state anytime soon. "While we can't say exactly when we'll resume testing, getting California Department of Motor Transportation approval to test is an important step in this direction in Uber's hometown," a company spokesperson said.
