Uber will take over river transportation on the Thames in London

Londoners will soon be able to use the Uber app to book boat trips on the Thames. According to The Guardian, taxi company Uber has entered into a cooperation agreement with the river operator Thames Clippers, under which the service "Uber Boats by Thames Clippers" will provide transportation by river boats.

Uber will take over river transportation on the Thames in London

Under the contract, Uber will buy the rights to use the Thames Clipper fleet of 20 ships under its brand, as well as 23 berths between Putney and Woolwich. As expected, the contract will be concluded for at least three years.

Uber users will be able to book a trip on the Thames through the app and board using a QR code generated by the app on their phone. The motor ships will operate on predetermined routes, as they do at present.

Thames Clippers tickets will continue to be available everywhere and the boats will remain part of the Oyster network. The cost of travel will also remain the same and Londoners will still be able to use existing payment methods to buy a ticket, including contactless cards and Oyster cards, according to The Evening Standard.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, river fleets will enforce social distancing rules better than crowded underground transport, Uber says.

London has also started investing in cycling infrastructure due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the UK government has accelerated testing of electric scooter rental services.
