Ubuntu 19.04 "Disco Dingo" - what's new

Released the release of a new version of Ubuntu - 19.04 "Disco Dingo". Ready-made images are generated for all editions, including Ubuntu Kylin (special version for China). Among the main innovations, the parallel existence of X.Org and Wayland should be noted. At the same time, the possibility of fractional scaling in the form of an experimental function appeared. And it works in both modes.

The developers have improved the performance and responsiveness of the desktop, made smoother animation of icons and scaling. The GNOME Shell has changed the initial setup wizard, bringing more options to the front screen. The shell itself has been updated to version 3.32, and many graphic elements and work mechanisms have been changed.

Also, by default, the Tracker service was activated, which automatically indexes files and keeps track of recent access to files. This is reminiscent of mechanisms in Windows and macOS.

The Linux kernel itself has been updated to version 5.0. This build adds support for AMD Radeon RX Vega and Intel Cannonlake GPUs, Raspberry Pi 3B/3B+ boards, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. Support for USB 3.2 and Type-C has also been expanded, and performance has improved in the area of power consumption. Other tools have also been updated, including programming language compilers, the QEMU emulator, and all major client applications.

Kubuntu has KDE Plasma 5.15 and KDE Applications 18.12.3. Also now uses a double click to open files and directories. The usual behavior for Plasma can be returned in the settings. Also for KDE Plasma, a minimal installation mode is available, which is selected in the installer. It installs LibreOffice, Cantata, mpd and some multimedia and network applications. The mail program is not installed in this mode.

And in Ubuntu Budgie, the desktop has been updated to Budgie 10.5. In this build, the design and layout of the desktop has been redesigned, a section for quick installation of snap packages has been added, and the Nautilus file manager has been replaced with Nemo.

Xubuntu and Lubuntu have stopped preparing 32-bit builds, although the repositories with packages for the i386 architecture are preserved and there is support. Also, GIMP, AptURL, LibreOffice Impress and Draw were included in the base distribution of Xubuntu.

Ubuntu MATE continues to work with the MATE 1.20 desktop. It has carried over some fixes and improvements from MATE 1.22. The very idea of remaining on the old version is explained by the possibility of incompatibility with Debian 10. Therefore, in the name of unifying packages with the "ten", they left the old assembly.

These are just the main changes and innovations of the version. At the same time, we note that the update can already be downloaded and installed, but version 19.04 does not belong to the LTS category. In other words, this is practically a beta version, while 20.04, which will be released in a year, will be more stable.
