Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will receive additional GNOME performance optimizations

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the upcoming LTS release of the operating system from Canonical, promises to bring a number of performance optimizations to the GNOME desktop environment. The new improvements are aimed at improving efficiency and usability, especially for users with multiple monitors and those using Wayland sessions.

In addition to the GNOME triple buffering patches that are not yet included in the Mutter upstream, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Debian are planning to introduce additional performance optimizations. Daniel van Vugt from Canonical continues to work on triple buffering and recently introduced a small redesign of the code.

One of the patches proposed for the Mutter Debian package addresses the use of video cards for additional monitors connected to additional video cards in Wayland sessions. Previously, this required the use of mainstream graphics cards, which could result in reduced performance. The patch resolves a performance issue reported in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS in April 2022.

Also introduced is a patch for the KMS CRTC code that fixes mouse cursor stuttering issues on Mutter 45 due to KMS stream optimizations.
