Ubuntu Cinnamon has become the official edition of Ubuntu

Members of the technical committee that manages the development of Ubuntu approved the adoption of the Ubuntu Cinnamon distribution, which offers the Cinnamon user environment, among the official editions of Ubuntu. At the current stage of integration with the Ubuntu infrastructure, the formation of test builds of Ubuntu Cinnamon has already begun and work is underway to organize testing in the quality control system. If no major issues are identified, Ubuntu Cinnamon will be included in the officially offered builds starting with the release of Ubuntu 23.04.

The Cinnamon userspace is developed by the Linux Mint development community and is a fork of the GNOME Shell, the Nautilus file manager, and the Mutter window manager, aimed at providing a classic GNOME 2-style environment with support for the nifty interaction elements of the GNOME Shell. Cinnamon builds on the GNOME components, but these components are shipped as a periodically synchronized fork with no external dependencies to GNOME. Of the third-party applications, the base distribution of Ubuntu Cinnamon includes LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Rhythmbox, GIMP, Celluloid, gThumb, GNOME Software and Timeshift.
