The technical committee responsible for Ubuntu releases has decided to exclude Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Unity from the Ubuntu 26.04 Long Term Support (LTS) releases. Additional releases that will receive LTS status in the spring 26.04 release include Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu Cinnamon (Kubuntu isn't on the list, but it's likely just forgotten).
Ubuntu Unity is without developers and missed the fall 25.10 release. Ubuntu MATE is still stuck on the MATE 1.26 branch, formed in 2021, with unresolved issues and a shortage of developers. MATE development has been stagnant since last spring.
