Ubuntu Studio moves from Xfce to KDE

Developers Ubuntu Studio, the official edition of Ubuntu, optimized for the processing and creation of multimedia content, made a decision switch to using KDE Plasma as your default desktop. Ubuntu Studio 20.04 will be the last version to ship with the Xfce shell. According to the published clarification, the Ubuntu Studio distribution, unlike other editions of Ubuntu, is not tied to its own desktop environment, but strives to provide a working environment that is most convenient for its target audience. KDE, according to the developers, is the best option in modern conditions.

Π’ announcement KDE Plasma is said to have proven to have the best tools for graphic artists and photographers, as seen in Gwenview, Krita, and even the Dolphin file manager. In addition, KDE provides better support for Wacom tablets than any other desktop environment. KDE has proven so good that most members of the Ubuntu Studio team now use Kubuntu on a daily basis with Ubuntu Studio add-ons installed via the Ubuntu Studio Installer. Since many of the developers are now using KDE, it's time to focus on moving to KDE Plasma in the next release.

It's worth noting that the developers of Ubuntu Studio also mentioned why KDE is potentially the best choice for them: β€œThe KDE Plasma desktop environment without Akonadi has become as lightweight as Xfce, maybe even easier. Other audio-focused Linux distributions such as Fedora Jam and KXStudio have historically used KDE Plasma and have done well." Ubuntu Studio has become the second distribution to recently change its main desktop environment - previously Lubuntu switched from LXDE to LXQt.
