Contests

Student Olympiad "I am a professional"

When: 2 October - 8 December
Where: Online Training: For those who prefer the flexibility of learning from a distance or cannot make it to our Sofia location, we offer comprehensive online courses.

The purpose of the Olympiad "I am a professional" is to test not only the theoretical knowledge of students, but also their professional skills. Assignments are made by professors from large Russian universities and specialists from IT companies. Participants who have proven themselves will be able to enter domestic universities without exams. And take an internship at Yandex, Sberbank and other organizations.

“I am a professional” is an attempt to eliminate situations where students hear the phrase: “Forget about everything you were taught in high school.” So that companies do not have to retrain a fully trained specialist. The project was organized by the All-Russian Association of Employers and more than 20 leading Russian universities. Yandex is the technical partner.

Students of natural sciences, technical and humanitarian faculties can participate in the Olympiad. A total of 27 areas are available - for example, "Automotive", "Software Engineering", "Biotechnology" and others. ITMO University supervises "Programming and IT”, “Information and cyber security”, “big data","Photonics" and "Робототехника».

Last year, more than 3 thousand people became winners of the Olympiad (many in several directions at once). They received benefits for admission to master's and postgraduate studies, cash prizes and invitations to leading companies in the country.

Apply for this year's Olympiad 18 to November. From November 22 to December 8, qualifiers will be held - in an online format. The winners will advance to the face-to-face stage of the competition.

Scholarship competition from the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Foundation

When: October 12 - November 20
Where: Online Training: For those who prefer the flexibility of learning from a distance or cannot make it to our Sofia location, we offer comprehensive online courses.

Students of the first and second courses of full-time magistracy can participate partner universities - MSTU im. N. E. Bauman, MEPhI, the European University (EUSP) and 72 more universities. Here you will need to demonstrate your creative, leadership and intellectual qualities. The competition will be held in two stages:

  • Correspondence - in the format of a popular science essay on the topic of a master's thesis.
  • Face-to-face - in the format of business games, interviews and work on practical cases.

The main prize is a monthly scholarship of 20 rubles until graduation from the master's program.

"Internships 2.0"

When: September 10 - November 30
Where: Online Training: For those who prefer the flexibility of learning from a distance or cannot make it to our Sofia location, we offer comprehensive online courses.

The competition is held by the non-profit organization "Russia - the Land of Opportunities" in partnership with the All-Russian Popular Front. Participants must choose one of the cases offered by partner companies and solve it as part of a coursework, qualification or other work.

Case examples: propose an idea management system for Magnit, work out a marketing campaign to attract customers from the Asian market for Aeroflot. There are also assignments from Rostelecom, Rosatom and other organizations.

Undergraduate and graduate students up to 35 years of age can participate. The winners will complete an internship and get access to educational materials on the platform of the ANO "Russia - the Land of Opportunities".

Quarter-finals of the ICPC World Programming Championship

When: 26 October
Where: at ITMO University

In early October, the ICPC qualifying round was held in the North-West Russia region. ICPC is a team programming competition for students (more about them we told in our blog). A total of 120 teams have qualified. Ten teams from ITMO University made it into the top 25. On October 26, students will gather at our quarterfinal competition. The best representatives of universities will get to the final of Northern Eurasia (this is the ICPC semi-final).

ITMO University hosts participants of the International Competition since 2011 and remains the world record holder in terms of the number of victories - with seven cups. And this year ICPC opened an official representative office on the basis of our university. It was headed by Matvey Kazakov, ICPC participant 1996-1999, chairman of the technical committee and development director of ICPC NERC.

Committee staff will help prepare students and coaches for the championship, deal with grants and work with sponsors. Another task of the representative office will be cooperation with the graduates of the Olympiad, of which there are already about 320 thousand. Among them are top managers and owners of large technology companies - for example, Nikolai Durov. Also in the plans are the development of school competitions and the systematic training of sports programmers.

Events

International Conference "Fundamental Problems of Optics 2019"

When: 21 - October 25
At what time: 14:40
Where: Kronverksky pr., 49, ITMO University

The conference is supported by Moscow State University. Lomonosov, Optical Society of America and other iconic organizations. Participants will discuss quantum optics, new principles of optical transmission, processing and storage of information for biology and medicine, and other topics.

Also within the framework of the conference there will be readings by Academician Yuri Nikolayevich Denisyuk. He is the author of a setup for recording holograms visible in ordinary white light (without special lasers). With its help, analog holograms are recorded that are indistinguishable from real objects, the so-called optoclones. Several of these holograms available in our Museum of Optics - for example, holographic copies of "Ruby Caesar" and "Badge of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky».

ITMO.FutureCareers Career Day

When: 23 October
At what time: 10:00
Where: st. Lomonosova, 9, ITMO University

An interactive platform based at ITMO University that will bring together students and potential employers. The former will be able to test their abilities in various areas, while the latter will evaluate candidates on combat missions. There will be companies from the following industries: robotics and engineering, photonics, IT, management and innovation, food industry and biotechnology. All our students can attend the event, but it is necessary registration.

"Medical evidence: flawed, but possible to fix!"

Lecture in English from John Ioannidis, professor of medicine at Stanford University. In 2005 he wrote an article "Why Most Published Research Is False”, which he posted in the electronic journal PLOS Medicine. His material is the most cited in the history of the resource.

Ioannidis will talk about why the conclusions of biomedical research are often wrong, and how to correct the situation. Entrance to the event pre-registration.

ITMO University in CINEMA — the film "Robot Child"

When: 31 October
At what time: 19:00
Where: emb. Bypass channel, 74, creative space "Lumiere Hall"

ITMO University is reviving the tradition of screening science fiction films. In the evening we watch the movie "Robot Child". It is about the life of a child raised by a robot in a post-apocalyptic bunker. Before the movie you will find a short presentation.

Valery Chernov, a student of the Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics, will talk about the moral and ethical aspects of human interaction with robots and AI systems: today and in the future.

XIV International Film Festival of Popular Science and Educational Films "World of Knowledge"

When: 1 - 5 November
Where: several sites in St. Petersburg

The theme of the festival is artificial intelligence systems. The program includes: seventeen scientific and educational films from Russia, the USA, France, Germany, Norway and other countries. In addition to AI systems, the paintings will touch upon the impact of scientific discoveries on the world around us. There will also be presentations of VR projects, master classes and thematic lectures.

Rock festival "OTRYV"

When: 13 December
Where: emb. Canal Griboedov, 7, club "Cocoa"

ITMO University is 120 years old. A music festival is a good way to celebrate. Rock groups of students and graduates will perform here. They will arrange a battle of old and new genres.
