Peter Eckersley, co-founder of Let's Encrypt, dies

Peter Eckersley, one of the founders of Let's Encrypt, a non-profit, community-controlled CA that provides free certificates to anyone, has passed away. Peter served on the board of directors of the non-profit organization ISRG (Internet Security Research Group), which is the founder of the Let's Encrypt project, and worked for the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) human rights organization for a long time. The idea promoted by Peter to encrypt the entire Internet by providing free certificates to all sites seemed unrealistic to many, but the Let's Encrypt project created showed the opposite.

In addition to Let's Encrypt, Peter is known as the founder of many initiatives related to privacy, net neutrality and AI ethics, as well as the creator of such projects as Privacy Badger, Certbot, HTTPS Everywhere, SSL Observatory and Panopticlick.

Peter was admitted to the hospital last week and was diagnosed with cancer. The tumor was removed, but Peter's condition deteriorated rapidly due to complications that arose after the operation. On Friday night, despite resuscitation, Peter died suddenly at the age of 43.
