"What we've done with Sony is really designed at their request, for their 'special sauce'," Lisa Su told CNBC. “It's a great honor for us. We're very excited about what the next generation PlayStation can do."
What exactly the head of AMD means by “special sauce” is not completely clear. We can assume that we are talking about support for real-time ray tracing, which will be supported by the Navi GPU. Sony, by the way, confirmed this. Or the "sauce" will consist of several "ingredients", and the trace will become one of them. On the other hand, Lisa Su could be talking about something completely different, because the PlayStation 5 itself is still far from being released, and there is clearly something more in it than what has already been announced.
Sony itself has now stated that the PlayStation 5 will be based on an AMD processor with Zen 2 architecture and an AMD Navi-based graphics accelerator. Both of these elements alone should provide a very significant performance boost compared to the hardware of the current PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. It is all the more interesting that, among other things, the future Sony console will also receive a solid-state drive, which will also have a positive effect on performance.
We also note that according to one of the developers, the graphics performance in the currently available PlayStation 5 developer kits is almost 13 teraflops. Of course, this is unofficial information, and besides, early development kits may differ significantly from the final product. But in any case, the graphics in the new PlayStation should be powerful. The source also noted a large amount of fast RAM.
