The route from Darwin to Adelaide is 3000 km long and passes through the wilderness through the desert. After 17:00, the participants of the race set up a camp for rest, in order to start moving again the next day. In the week leading up to the competition, the teams passed a series of practical tests for safety and compliance with the requirements of the competition.

"This event is relevant today, if not more so than it was when we launched in 1987," said Event Director Chris Selwood.

On the third day of the competition, Solar Team Twente from the Netherlands is in the lead.
